Night Art Photography

I have taken some Pix in the last months - please tell me if you like them:
Picture Site Tell me if you like them - i love to discuss the photos with you!
It's one of the greatest tools available to photographers, it's easy to use, and yet it's among the least known and used abilities of a camera today. Pro photographers have used it for decades, but the amateur can use these same techniques without paying the professional price. It's called depth of field, and it's accessed through the use of the aperture.
The aperture, simply put, is the hole that light comes through in your camera. Light passes through the front of the lens, through a series of glass pieces, through a hole at the back of the lens, and into the camera. The aperture is the hole in the back of the lens, and you get to control this vital part of the camera, if you decide to want to bump up your pictures. You can place the camera on auto, and the camera will adjust its aperture, shutter and more to the situation it sees. By placing the camera in more manual modes, you take on powerful and personal control, and YOU get to decide what you want to create with your photographs.
An important factor here is lighting. Any photography relies heavily on the lighting that you are using, whether it be from the natural, ambient light around you, or artificial light, like a strobe or other flash unit. Especially while using natural light, it will be important to use a tripod to keep the camera steady while shooting. If you are shooting on a cloudy day, without much light, then the camera must compensate for less light by having a longer shutter speed, which it will do automatically in the mode I'll be explaining in a moment. A longer shutter speed means the camera won't be able to have a clearly focused picture without the use of the tripod.
Depth of field simply means the area of focus, or the area in the picture that is in focus might be a more accurate term. Photography is a two dimensional medium, having height and width, but it lacks depth, the third dimension. Your photography can create the illusion of that depth through a few easy camera settings. You may be asking yourself, why would I want to create the illusion of depth, and what is it good for? Part of the reason is to create a sense of emphasis. When you take a picture of a large area, with trees, birds, squirrels, people, rocks, etc, what is the thing or object that you are zeroing in on? Is there anything that you really want to emphasize to your viewer? If so, it's probably getting lost in the crowd of other things on the scene. The squirrels are so small you can barely see them, the people are walking their dogs, and the trees are swaying in the breeze. But what if you wanted to focus on the viewer on the flowers in the garden? When you create emphasis on an object, it strengthens your photo, and actually guides the eye of the viewer to that object. You could take pictures to create a story about that, as you can read in my article about photo stories. When you get in to take close-ups of the flowers is where the possibilities of great photography begin.
Emphasize the garden by focusing in on one or two flowers at a time. Grab a tripod, get down to eye level with them, and then get ready. Place your camera in a mode that allows you to change your aperture; the mode is usually called “A”, or “AV” on some models. Film cameras can allow these changes too, on SLR models. They require you to simply change the f-stop manually on the aperture ring. On your digital camera, use your selector buttons to change your aperture. You'll see on your digital camera, most likely, a letter f, with the number on the readout on either the monitor, or the info panel on the top of the camera, or perhaps both areas. The f means f-stop, which is the name commonly used to describe the number of the aperture setting. The best way to emphasize a flower is to have only that flower in focus, and to have the rest out of focus. Change your aperture to a really low number, such as 2.8, 4, or 5.6. When the lens is at a low number like this, the lens hole is wide open, but it is creating a small area or depth of field; basically an inch or two will be in focus. Focus your camera, and shoot. Now, look at the camera, and look at your pictures. The one or two flowers should be in focus, but do you see how the background is fuzzy and out of focus? This is what is called a “shallow depth of field”, and that comes from using a small number f-stop. That's because you've taken control of your camera, and changed the outcome! Because only the flower is in focus, and the rest is blurred out, you have guided your viewer to what YOU want to emphasize! You have used one of the most powerful tools available for a photographer to bring a new focus to your pictures. Try this with a lot of different scenes; look how the item is forced to really stand out for you because it's the only thing in focus.
Now, on the opposite end of the spectrum are the pictures that have the entire photograph in focus; such as a lighthouse standing out from the beach, with horseshoe crab shells in the immediate foreground. This is also done by changing the depth of field of your camera. Here, you again change your aperture, but this time place it on a high number like 16, 22, 28, etc. This is to create a large depth of field by using a small hole in the back of the lens. Again, you must use a tripod to keep the camera steady. Take a picture with something in the near foreground, such as a rock or the crab shells, and then compose your picture with a mountain or some other object some distance away, focus, and shoot. Remember to use the rule of thirds here for additional emphasis. As you'll see, both areas should be in focus, again showing the third dimension and creating the illusion of depth. This is a large depth of field.
It's a little known tool in the photographer's toolbox, but almost any camera made in the past four years will have some sort of ability to work with depth of field, whether they have a point and shoot or DSLR. Every photographer, of every level, has the ability, through practice, to create beautiful photographs that can rival those of the pros, by using the tools available with every camera. Use the strength of depth of field when you create the third dimension in your photographs, and add a new and incredibly
powerful personal dimension to your photography.

Hello everyone,
I am after a bit of help. I have a photography business that is quite new. I am now looking to market it and I am after a logo for it. The logo would be used from business cards to a website and all in between.
My business is called Catch The Moment Photography.
1.My website is : www.catchthemomentphotography.com.au
2. website is a just one that I am using until I can afford a more professional looking one as I am trying to keep my overheads low.
3.I don't really have any favourite logos or designs in mind.
4.I would be needing the resolution sizes to vary as I would eventually be wanting to use them for business cards, shirts, brochures, website.
5.I don't have any images or clipart
6. Colour - open - just not pink or purple or girlie colours - I have a male photographer help me out occasionally and he would feel odd handing out pink business cards and the like!
I am based in Patterson Lakes, Melbourne, Australia and cater for weddings, portraits, special occasion, sporting and pets.
I am looking for something sleek and professional.
I have been looking through the various posts and see that there are some incredibly talented people out there. Thankyou in advance!
regards
Liza-Jayne

Alysha Castonguay Topless Photos Ignite Controversy
February 5, 2010
I made some Photos in the last days - please tell me if you like them:
Images Website Tell me if you like them - i love to discuss the photos with you!
I've worked with Photoshop and its effects on a regular basis for over eight years, quickly becoming the “go-to” expert for friends and family with photo retouching, enhancement, or other graphics needs. Over the years I've used a great deal of different Photoshop effects for different purposes, and have found ways to make utilizing the effects easier and more enjoyable for both the average and the advanced Photoshop user.
One really popular effect in Photoshop is to add color to a grayscale photo. Don't mistake this for the effect of taking color from a photo and just putting elements back; that's something different entirely. This article focuses on applying color to a picture that was gray to start with. This effect works well in making certain family photos or other scenes more dramatic.
While the steps to colorizing a grayscale picture are fairly simple, the biggest problem people face with the process is accidentally removing the detail by the time they're done. The truth is it's actually quite possible to add color and keep the detail in any of your photos.
(Disclaimer: I've had people ask me complex questions about getting into the professional photography business. While I have friends in the profession and know that Photoshop is a necessary tool for the modern photographer, I'm not in the business, so I can't answer related questions; I just have a knack for retouching the photos of friends and family and am familiar with the workings of the program.)
First step is to ensure you're working on the photo in color, not grayscale, mode. It sounds like a silly thing to say, but if you forget this step you're going to hit a brick wall pretty fast. Click on Image/Mode and have the document set on RGB (unless you plan to print the photo professionally, in which case you choose CMYK.)
Next, make a new layer by pressing “New Layer” on the Layers Palette. Now your work will be on a separate canvas, so your original photo won't be touched (yet.). The blending mode on your layer should be at “Overlay”, to let the photo's detail peek through rather than having the paint color be opaque.
Click on the “Brush” tool, then click on the foreground color (located near the bottom of your Toolbar.) Let's assume you want a nice, soft color for your picture, such as peach or light blue. Choose the closest color and click “OK”.
It might be a good idea at this point to zoom in on the photo. Click Window/New Window for (whatever you've named your photo). Now we can see the close-up details on our photo, while still being able to see the normal size. Whatever you do to the photo in the close-up view will also occur in the other view, giving you a real-time update. Hit Ctrl + to zoom in, Ctrl - to go back. You may also realize that hitting the spacebar in your close-up view will let you drag your picture with your mouse.
Don't fret if you make a mistake-that's why we made the layer. Click on the “Eraser” tool and brush it over the mistake, then just start over.
So you've slaved over your photo for hours and you're happy with its progress, but then decide you wanted a different color. Now what? No, put the scissors down. This problem, unlike many in life, is easy to fix. Make an “adjustment layer” by clicking the circle (it should be half black and half white) on your Layers Palette, then click on Hue/Saturation. Drag the slidebar to the right and watch the painted area of your photo change colors. Pretty easy, right? If your new color seems a little outlandish on the finished product, go back to the same menu and bring down the Saturation a little bit.
And there you have it. Although this tutorial explained how to color your grayscale pictures with a brush, it's far from the only method. Are you trying to colorize line art instead of a photo? The Wand tool will be of much better use to you to fill in the white areas. That's just one other method; don't be afraid to experiment. The best part about colorizing a photo with Photoshop is that you can see how a color will look before changing the picture, thanks to the adjustment layer and your slidebar in the Hue/Saturation box. Enjoy, and have a little fun with your colors!

One of the most important choices a couple will make is a photographer for their wedding.
There are so many things to decide like the dress, decor, food, music, location, etc. Many couples feel the choice of a photographer is one of the most important since your pictures will be one of the most lasting and cherished memories from one of life’s major events.
We’ve all heard dissapointing stories about photographers delivering poor quality images, or not delivering anything at all. By taking the time to do some research you can be assured of choosing someone who will not only provide outstanding pictures, but who can make you feel good and remove at least one worry from a day filled with stresses.
If any of your friends have been married in recent years . Why not ask them who shot their wedding and look at their wedding pictures to see how the photographer did. You’ll probably discover good references this way, so contact the photographers who did a great job for your friends.
It also pays to do some research yourself. Search Google or another search engine for photographers in your area – here in the capital city of Alberta Canada, you’d want to search for Edmonton Wedding Photographers. You can also do a search for something like Edmonton photography. Either way, you’ll get hundreds of results, so look at those shown on the first few pages. When you visit the different websites, you’ll get a feel for each photographer’s style. Contact as many as you like. Their response is a good indication of how professional they are. Are the replies professional and written clearly? Have they provided any other examples or references?
Next, make appointments with those who seem like they’ll shoot the kind of pictures you want and who are in your budget. When you meet with the photographer, they’ll show you sample pictures and albums. How they treat you at this stage is a good example of what you can expect at your wedding. Are they friendly, or are they condescending? Do they seem warm, or are you uncomfortable with how they treat you?
The photographer will have an agreement for you to sign. Take your time to read it, as it outlines what is expected of both parties. The agreement is also for your protection, too. While it commits you to pay them, it also commits them to provide the services you have agreed to.
Here are a few additional ideas that should help your photographer get the best shots for you:
1. Create a list of the most important shots you want and provide it to the photographer before the wedding.
2. Make sure you know WHO is going to photograph your wedding. If the main photographer isn’t going to be the actual photographer at your wedding, find out who will – and be sure to see their personal portfolio before you commit to hiring them.
3. Assign a family member or close friend to be the photographer’s liason who can point out all the important family members who you want to be sure to get pictures of.
4. Ask the photographer to attend the rehearsal so they will be familiar with where they can get the best shots without getting in the way.
5. Pre-plan where the formal and informal photographs will be shot.
6. Find out if the photographer provides finished prints, albums, thank-you cards and similar services after the wedding. These can be valuable extras that will enhance your wedding day memories and many photographers have excellent resources for these items that are of higher quality than the public can get.
By following these suggestions you won’t have to worry about your photographer. Just enjoy your wedding day knowing you’ll have many wonderful photographs to enjoy for the rest of your life.
The author is a professional photographer who specializes in wedding and portrait photography in Edmonton, Alberta.

I have taken some Images in the last months - please tell me if you like them:
Hier Tell me if you like them - i love to discuss the photos with you!
Trying to put together a wedding that is uniquely yours can seem overwhelming at times. With so many details to decipher and so many decisions to make, many couples turn to consultants for help in creating a wedding that truly reflects their special perspective. However, the internet has made it easier than ever to customize every aspect of your wedding. Designing and ordering photo wedding invitations online is one of the best ways to put your own personal stamp on the day right from the very beginning, and there are so many different options available, you're almost guaranteed to find a style and price that works for both of you.
Start by choosing a photo that's meaningful to you. Most couples opt for a picture that shows both their faces, but you could also use a closeup of your joined hands, a silhouetted embrace, a favorite shared activity, or even a special location that's significant for you. Your photo should be available in a digital form so that it can be emailed to the company; most of these services prefer JPEGS and the resolution should be as high as possible. If you cannot provide a photo that is at least 300 dpi, you may want to reconsider photo invitations, and for best results, the photo should be 600 dpi.
Got the photo? Now decide how much emphasis you want to place on it. You may want to pair it with a verse or quotation, or have it stand alone. In either case, there will be other information that needs to appear on the invitation, and you should decide where the recipients' initial focus should be. This, in turn, will help you start to visualize your invitation before you even begin checking out various styles.
Next, consider whether you want to include any or all of the accoutrements of a formal invitation. Do you need the traditional inner envelope that is used to specify exactly who you are inviting (i.e. Mr. John Smith and Guest?) How will your recipients let you know if they plan to attend? R.S.V.P cards and envelopes are the usual method, but you may want to invite people to respond by email and save on postage. Are your wedding and reception in the same location? Will you need to insert cards inviting a smaller group of guests to one or the other? These options can make a big difference in the cost of your invitation package.
Once you have an idea of what you are looking for, visit the sites listed below. Many other sites offer additional designs and options, but these are a good place to start and will provide an excellent overview of the packages available.
Fun Foto Invitations.com
URL: http://www.photoannouncementsweddinginvitations.com/
A good choice for those seeking photo invitations on a modest budget. While a number of different layouts are available, this site basically offers “all-in-one” 5 x 7″ photo wedding invitations and envelopes. Inserts (such as maps/directions, reception cards, etc.) and R.S.V.P. cards are available at an extra charge. Up to 5 proofs are provided for approval prior to printing to ensure that your invitation will look the way you want it.
Photo Wedlock Invitations
URL: http://www.photowedlockinvitations.com
While some of the 56 different designs available at this site are very affordable, others are decidedly “upscale” and have accents such as translucent overlays or satin bows. Some include inside envelopes while others are designed as “seal-and-send” invitations that don't require envelopes. The site allows you to lay out the wording of your invitation and preview it in several different fonts or colors, which makes the decision-making process much easier. A proof will be emailed within 3 days.
Hopefully you're now on your way to creating an invitation that you and your guests will treasure for many years to come.

Omar and Jeff didn’t address the most pressing needs in the offseason….pitching, speed and defense. They have put all there money on EVERYONE returning to form and in some cases their best years(Ollie and Maine) for this team to compete. Phils got better and we didn’t.
Other than Lackey being signed there was no FA that I was crazy about(this includes Bay). I would have signed Lacky and waited on Crawford in 2011-a more suited player for Citi Field.
That said I am disturbed that Omar hasn’t pulled the trigger on a trade or two.
He is paid the big bucks to be creative and we are NOT seeing it.
And don’t forget we won’t have Beltran until June.
I have never been as bummed about an upcoming season as this one.
At least the picture looks nice.

First no one was interested in Paul Volcker.
Then Obama got everyone either excited or enraged about the Volcker Rule and he became famous.
Now all people care about is taking a photo with him.
“Don't congratulate me,” he told Sondra Gotlieb from the Vancouver Post.
“I'm just a photo op.”
Ok, so he's humble.
He likes to order a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken. He enjoys salmon fishing in Canada and a plate of oysters on his birthday.
And sadly, nobody understands him, or wants to hear his ideas about Detriot.
“All they wanted was my picture for the press.”
At least it's kind of hard to take a photo of him. He's really tall - 6'7''.
This one bag pretty much does it all: The Kata 3N1-33 ($145 street) could be the single bag that fits all your needs if you're unsure what bag you want — laptop, camera, video camera - and if you're torn between a backpack or sling bag configuration. Pull out the inserts and you've got a roomy padded bag for schoolbooks or for a day trip. The bright orange interior makes it easy to find things and it's a handsome bag as far as black backpacks go. As a sling it works equally well for right- and left-handed users. Drawbacks are minor: It needs bigger zipper pulls and some thick pro lenses don't comfortably.
Here's how to visualize the Kata 3N1-33: It's a largish backpack, 18 x 13 x 9 inches (HWD), divided two-thirds (cameras on bottom), one-third (stuff on top). Movable padded dividers provide eight slots for lenses, flashes, a video camera, and one camera with a long telephoto lens attached. At the back is a laptop area measuring 17 x 11 x 2 inches, which Kata says holds a 15.4-inch laptop and which actually fits some 17-inch laptops very snugly.
Remove the photo inserts, unzip and push aside the top-bottom divider, and you've got a traditional backpack. In this way it's like the LowePro Versapack 200 ($100, see review), a more easily compressible backpack that can be squished down to go in your vacation luggage as an extra bag. But the Versapack 200 has no laptop slot, making it more like the Kata 3N1-30 (details below).
The backpack straps adjust four ways: traditional backpack, backpack with straps crossed in an X in front, left sling, or right sling. As a sling, you can slide the bag from your back under your left or right side to the front, then exchange gear. Flip the dividers 180 degrees and you've got in configured for use by a left-hander, meaning the largest divider space, the one holding the camera and your longest lens, is the one you come to first.
Zippered openings on the sides let you access some gear without opening the main flap, and four snap-lock buckles provide extra security. All this is pretty slick. Other makers have this feature, such as Tamrac with the Aero Speed Pack line; it's a backpack with an opening on one side but not the other.
And most other bags don't have the back sides of the backpack straps finished in red not black. (Photo, right.) It's a minor bit of elegant design. Most backpacks are either black or gray (entirely), or finished in in-your-face ROY G BIV hues.
The Bag Could Use Bigger Zipper Pulls
I found a few aspects of the bag less than optimal. Most of the zippers are just zippers with hard metal or plastic zipper pulls. The top compartment has two fabric zipper pulls but not the four zippers securing the main, camera compartment. Other high end bags add fabric or leather zipper pulls for all main compartments so you gain more leverage, especially if it's cold outside, your fingers are numb from the cold, and you're in a hurry to change lenses.
Big Pro Lenses Barely Fit
As with most other sectioned backpack bags with three divided rows for photo gear, your lenses fit nicely if they're mainstream lenses such as a 35-70mm zoom or 75-300mm f/5.6 zoom. These are the ones you can fit in a compartment with the lens standing upright (see the lenses at the bottom of the left-hand photo above). But it's a different story if you're carrying a lens with a barrel about 3 inches wide (and a reversible lens hood that makes it almost 4 inches wide), such as the 70-200mm f/2.8 lens prized by professionals. That lens hogs the space of the partitions on either side. Sort of like the fat guy in the middle seat on your flight.
The photo above shows that very lens (70-200mm f/2.8) fitting nicely but that's without the lens shade. Trust me: It's tight in real life. You can move the dividers on one side, but then you limit what fits on the far side. Or you could put the lens shades in the top compartment. The real solution would be to swipe an inch from the top compartment, but then the photo compartment would be roomier than needed for 95% of mainstream users. Again, this is not a problem unique to Kata or this Kata bag.
Other Neat Features
Some other things that make the bag useful and may explain what it's selling for $145 not $75:
-
There's a handle at the very top that you'll find super-useful for carrying the bag short distances; with other bags, you just pick it up by one of the backpack straps.
-
Kata includes a rain cover for lousy weather. You store it inside the bag in its own pouch. Tamrac and Thinktank Photo do that, too, while Lowepro bags build the rain cover into the base, which I prefer because you can't lose it, but that also means you wind up putting the cover away wet sometimes.
-
There's no tripod holder for serious photographers but it's available as a $20 accessory.
-
There are waist straps preferred by serious backpackers - the same waist straps that get in the way of most everyone else, flop into the aisle when you fly and get tangled in the beverage cart wheels, and snag other luggage when you're unloading the trunk of your car. These slide into a sleeve so if you don't use them, they don't get into the way.
-
A luggage cart sleeve makes it easy to hang the Kata 3N1-33 on a larger rolling bag. Anyone who's tried to wrap the backpack straps around a roll-aboard bag knows the bag quickly slides off and tangles in the wheels of the rolling bag.
If your needs call for slightly less photo gear, Kata makes two smaller bags. The 3N1-11 (16 x 9 x 8, $100) holds a camera, a couple lenses, and a small netbook. The midsize 3N1-22 (17 x 9 x 9) holds a camera, 3-4 lenses (or a combination of lenses, flashes, and small video cameras), and a netbook. If you like this kind of bag but don't need to carry a laptop, there are equivalent big-medium-small bags, the Kata 3N1-30, Kata 3N1-20, and Kata 3N1-10. The line is fairly new as of 2010, so if you do an online search, you may not get hits on all the bags. Keep trying.
I was photographing in the last couple of months - please tell me what they tell you:

I get asked a lot by both photographers and clients what my policy is on letting my clients post their images to their blogs and facebook account. I personally love it when my clients post their family pictures on their blogs, facebook, etc. It shows me that they truly love their images! I encourage my clients to copy their pictures from my blog to use on the internet. Here are a few do’s and don’ts that you should think about when reposting your images:
1) DO ask your photographer what their specific policy is on taking pictures off of their blogs. Some photographers encourage it and some don’t allow it. If this is important to you this is something you should ask BEFORE you hire your photographer!
2) DO include your photographer’s name and website under the images (a link would be super nice!). That’s just the polite thing to do
3) DON’T crop out their logo. Most photographers use their blogs to advertise their work and do so as a courtesy to give their clients a sneak peek. If a client crops out the logo then how will other people know who took the picture?
4) DON’T edit the picture in ANY way. Taking the pictures is only half of a photographer’s job. The other half is editing. If you think you can do a better job or want to edit out some of your wrinkles or use selective coloring please don’t. That is super insulting. If you don’t like your photographer’s editing enough to want to edit it yourself than maybe you need to find another photographer next year.
5) DON’T try to print from the files on the blog. For me specifically I know that the files I upload to my blog are too small to be printed in a 4×6 size. It’s not cool to invest in a family session and then print the images off of the blog and not pay for prints. Make sure you know how much the prints cost before the session to avoid sticker shock. Same goes for scanning prints that you already bought. Not cool (and illegal)! Some of my family members are guilty of printing images off of my blog. It makes me cringe when I see them FRAMED in their homes with my logo still on there! To be fair, I’m also not great at emailing them the file when they ask for it
*used and edited with the permission of the author*
Ok so now you ask what exactly are your policies on this?
I have no problem with you copying the images from my blog to use on Facebook, MySpace, your family blog, etc. In fact if you ask I will even email you the watermarked copies of the blog pictures and any that you order. BUT you are not allowed to edit them in ANY way. Do not crop out the logo (or really even crop at all) and give credit to the photographer (please tag me if we are Facebook friends). If you would like I will post them on Facebook and tag you in the photos so that you can share them without having to worry about it. You are in no way allowed to edit your photos-I edit them in my style which is what you hired me for. The photos are a representation of my work-I do not want my work associated with your bad edit. Do not print these photos either, they are a low resolution to protect me from theft and you from unscrupulous people stealing them and using your image for a purpose you may not like (think advertising for a disturbing product, it’s happened to many people). If you have any other questions on what you can and can not do with your photos, please ask me. You don’t want to accidentally break a copyright law that could cost you a lot.
If you have any ideas for future posts please let me know!

I taken a lot of Photos in the last weeks - please tell me when you like them:
src Tell me if you like them - i love to discuss the photos with you!
If you are planning a wedding, you already know how much things can add up. From invitations, venues, catering, decorations, and so on, you can quickly spend thousands of dollars on your wedding day, without even realizing where all of it went. In fact, according to theknot.com, the average wedding cost is $27,800 per couple! Think of how that money could have come in handy in case of an emergency, in putting down a down payment on a new home, or in financing a fantastic honeymoon! However, if you take control of your budget now, you can have a memorable, elegant wedding while saving thousands for your happily ever after years.
The first thing you need to do when you are planning a wedding is to decide on how much you can reasonably afford and then discuss which items are the most important to you. Many couples decide that photography is at the top of their list. Follow the tips below to have memorable pictures, while staying on budget:
Shop around for photographers
The first step in saving money in general is to find out who offers the service and how much they charge. Never accept the first offer that you receive. Call various photographers and ask them what they charge and what their service includes. Be sure to consider how much the entire cost of photography will be. For example, a photographer who charges less per hour who charges more per each picture may not be a good deal. Search through your phone book and go online to see photographer's blogs and samples of their pictures.
Think outside the (office)box
Although there are plenty of photographers who specialize in photography and have a career in photography, there are also many skilled photographers who have different day jobs, pursue photographer as an interest, or specialize in other forms of photography. Check around for people such as these who have experience in photographing weddings, but who do not depend on it for their bread and butter. Think about anyone you know who fits this criterion: someone who takes pictures for the local newspaper, a sports photographer, a friend who has taken a few photography courses, etc. They will often charge much less than photographers who make their living from inflated wedding packages. Typically anything associated with weddings is more expensive than something without the wedding association. So try to find a photographer that has similar experience with a much smaller price tag.
Get digital prints
Ask your photographer if he can photograph you with a digital camera. Any type of special effect like using sepia pictures, black and white pictures, red eye removal, coloring in certain elements like the flowers while leaving the rest of the picture muted, and so on can be completed by just a few buttons. So you won't have an effects expense passed on to you. Also, ask your photographer if he can give you the digital prints on a cd or memory card. If he does this, you will need to be sure that he has signed over the rights of ownership to you so that you can develop the pictures yourself. This step could save you hundreds, maybe even thousands, and you will only be paying for his hourly rate and the ownership rights, rather than a certain dollar amount * the amount of each picture.
Consider limiting the photographer's time
Consider the actual amount of time that you want to have the photographer around. Keep in mind that many photographers will also charge you for the time it takes to travel and set up for the pictures. Some brides want the photographer to take pictures while they are preparing for the wedding, but if you are not interested in these types of pictures, don't ask the photographer to be around during that hour. Consider having your photographer take your pictures during the important parts of the ceremony and formal posed pictures after the wedding. Then just have him stay for the first hour of the ceremony, rather than the entire event. You can still get in many of the important photos during this time, such as the first dance, the receiving line, and the cake tasting. But you can save hundreds of dollars if you do not keep the photographer around for the next 1-3 hours of the reception. And with many photographers charging hundreds of dollars an hour, this is easy money that you can pocket for your future.
Opt out of the reception
Consider not having your photographer take reception pictures at all. This will save time on moving between venues, set up, and hours off of his rate. Many brides today are opting for more photojournalistic pictures, rather than posed pics. Place a couple of disposable cameras on each guest table and ask for their help in taking pics at the reception. Be sure to leave a convenient basket for them to drop the cameras off at before they leave. For the cost of a few $5 cameras, you will wind up with hundreds of pictures to choose from without the hefty photographer's fee.
Compare packages
When deciding on a package, be sure that you are comparing what each photographer is offering you. Sometimes you will save money by going for a package deal, sometimes you may be better off deciding on a certain number of pictures, rather than a package. So carefully scrutinize the charges for each package. Also be leery of unnecessary charges: a $100 wedding photo album is not worth it when you can go to your local supermarket and buy one for $10. According to Elizabeth and Alex Lluch in Planning the Most Memorable Wedding On Any Budget, you can also save big if you place the pictures in the wedding album yourself. It might take a little time, but make a day of it with your new spouse to look back at your happy memories.
Skip the engagement photos
Although it might be nice to have pretty picture to send with your invitations or to the local newspaper for your engagement announcement, you can use alternative methods, rather than pay the hefty studio and professional photography fee. For example, if you already have existing formal photos of you and your fiancé, use those instead of opting for a multiple hundred dollar studio session. Alternatively, ask a friend with photography experience to set up a muted background or go to a natural setting and have her photograph you and your fiancé for your engagement photos. Finally, check a local family photography studio, such as Wal-mart, Sears, or JC Penny. They will have appropriate backgrounds, but charge much less than a wedding photographer.
Barter, barter, barter
If you have met with several photographers and you liked one more than the others, but he was a little too expensive, let him know that you received a better offer and see if he comes down on the price. Also, before you commit, be sure that you ask “Is this the best deal you can give me?” for even more wiggle room. In this economic time, more and more people are learning powerful negotiating skills and businesses are suffering from unprecedented losses. See how flexible your photographer will be with the price. If you can't quite get the deal you want, go with another photographer or see if your first choice can throw in a freebie, such as a free parent's album, rather than a reduction in price.
Barter some more
If you have any type of service that you complete, see if you can exchange your service for the photography or a portion of his fees. Also, if you blog or you are involved in advertising or website development, see if you can get a discount if you provide free advertising for the photographer after your event. This type of service exchange can be posted in a local newspaper ad or on craigslist.com. Alternatively, if you have a friend or relative getting married, see if your photographer will give you a discount for a positive recommendation and referral.
Consider a student photographer
Yes, it might be scary to put the future of your only wedding pictures in a non-expert's hands, but you can save big by asking a student photographer to capture your wedding day. Additionally, students are more likely to give you digital prints (see above) in exchange for them gaining experience and increasing their portfolio contents. Be sure that they have some previous experience and make sure you look at their previous work. Also, be sure that your expectations are clearly stated and make sure that they can be depended on and that they are punctual.
Regardless of which photographer you go with, be sure that you get recommendations for him, check his portfolio, and make sure that you both know what you will be getting. Be certain that any adjustments are in writing, especially if the photographer has reduced the price. Then rest assured that you have done your best to get the pictures you want, and the peace of mind you need as you begin your new life with cash in your pockets.

8×10 moonlight photograph by Alejandro Chaskielburg, 2009 EPF recipient, from his essay The High Tide
we now announce on Burn our third annual Emerging Photographer Fund grant …for 2010 we are offering a $15,000. stipend for an emerging photographer to finish an ongoing personal project…the deadline for entries will be April 15, 2010….funding for the EPF comes from generous anonymous donations from our audience here on Burn to the non-profit Magnum Cultural Foundation…these are very specific donations to the MCF and are apart from the general subscriptions and donations to Burn….
this year we must set up things a bit different from the last two years…we have no choice but to have a $25. entry fee per submission….last year almost killed Anton Kusters and yours truly with the almost 1200 submissions….we cannot do that again…this year the $25. will be well spent…we will be using a program called Slideroom to facilitate you entering and us having the grant juried in a first class manner…..with Slideroom you open a free account and you will literally have a “room” where you can work on your edit for the next two months…i.e. put in one picture today, four next week, change your edit, play with the pictures, do whatever you want, then hit the submit button on or before deadline..if you decide not to enter after all the editing etc., then simply do not hit submit and you are not charged…the system is way easier to use for all than anything before and makes it possible for us to have a wide prestigious jury (to be named soon) who can view your work at their leisure online and yet be communicating with each other all along…
so the financial breakdown is: $8. will go for this Slideroom program which is of great benefit to all of us (this is their fee to us per entrant)…$5. will go to a Haitian relief agency…and $12. will go to cover our admin costs for the EPF at Burn, and the costs associated with creating a sophisticated slide show and presentation of finalists and winner at this summer’s one time special Burn/Look3 event for emerging photographers in June…we realize this fee may keep some from entering….we considered this and came up with the lowest price we possibly could and still be able to continue this grant program at all …we do not feel this fee will discourage any serious entrants…
all details for the correct entering of project essay submissions will be seen under EPF 2010 in the right hand column of Burn…
i look forward to seeing all the new work….

It suits me perfectly. I love the soft, flowing lines, the hint of femininity, the colors. I feel it matches my style of photography as well. They were all really nice, though. I would be thrilled with any of the packages, but the "dreamy" is definitely a dream for me! As usual, LOVE your site. I foresee learning a lot from it. Turning your digital photos into an online photo album you can be proud to share with friends and family is easy. All you need is a good digital camera, a computer and lots of time for a new addiction. Follow this simple guide for creating photo albums online and you too will be sharing the best moments of your family's life.
Film vs. Digital
You don't necessarily have to spend a lot of money on a digital camera to create dramatic photo albums. It is possible to create albums with photos developed from film. It just isn't as efficient and the cost is higher in the long run considering you have to purchase film and have it developed as well as spend extra money on purchasing a good scanner. The upside to scanning your images is that you can always go back and upload old pictures taken before the digital camera era.
Photos that are uploaded to a computer directly from a camera tend to be sharper and more vibrant. For the novice or amateur photographer even a $50 digital camera produces slightly better images than those taken with film. Unless you have top of the line professional equipment.
Once you've mastered using your digital camera or scanner you're going to need someplace to put your photos if you want to create and share digital photo albums. Here is three of the most popular digital photo album sharing websites.
Shutterfly.com - Shutterfly is an online photo album service that allows you to upload and create on the fly. Their services include features that allow you to create books, postcards, calendars and photo gifts.
Photobucket.com - Photobucket is just like shutterfly. They are an online photo album sharing service that's simple to use and has a really cool community vibe. They've recently incorporated a scrapbooking area on their website and also give users the capability of maintaining a group photo album.
Picasa Web Albums - Brought to you by google this gem of a find is perfect for those new to creating digital photo albums. The users interface is simple to navigate. Albums happen with the click of a button.
The nice thing about using a third party digital photo album service like photobucket is that it's pretty much click and go. To create an album, log into your account at whichever photo album service you chose to use and locate the upload photos function and browse to files directly from your hard drive. Use the provided templates to build visually stunning presentations.
The process and capabilities for creating an online digital photo album is different for each site. Photobucket offers more of a variety of things you can do with your images than does shutterfly. Whereas sites like Picasa offer a simple, straightforward service that is designed with no frills to make it less complicated for the beginner. Look for the help section, FAQ or support section of the website you are using to get help with creating a digital online photo album.
That's all there is to it. Now you can share your photos online too. Go forth and create!

Canon 7D Video Test #1 – Subway
Robert Brienza has added a video to the pool:
I recently made the jump and purchased a Canon 7D, upgrading from my first DSLR, a Sony Alpha a100. It's a very impressive camera, amazingly fast, very quiet and impressively built.
At the moment I've only got one lens, a Canon 50mm 1.4. Seeing how I use my Minlota 50mm 1.7 on my a100 about 90% of the time I figured this would be a good choice. At least until I can get a Canon 16mm - 35mm 2.8.
This is a little edit I put together of some test footage I took one day while heading home from work. Just random footage, all hand held to just learn how the camera deals with video. It's actually been pretty busy at work so I haven't had much chance to use the 7D. I'd like to record some full HD video at 24fps.
For this clip, as I mentioned the footage was recorded at 1280×720 at 60fps. I then did a rough edit in After Effects where I also did a general levels adjust and quickly stabilized a couple of shots. I then worked my way down to a 30fps QuickTime with Photo-JPEG compression at 50% at 960×540 which is the clip I've uploaded to Flickr.

“We sort of had this soft announcement of a firmware upgrade, that i can confirm for you. Europe announced a little bit before us that theres going to be a firmware update that will add 24 frames to the camera itself and were expecting that first half of next year and that will add 24 frame rate to the 5D and that will match the other 3 cameras that do 24 (or 23.98) 29, 30 and 60i, also 720p as well as 1080 now so youll have 1080 & 720, you’ll do 60fps, 60p in 720 mode so your gonna get a lot of choices in terms of frame rates coming through”

Rumors suggest that Canon is leaving no stone unturned for a February launch for its EOS 60D DSLR and the Canon 550D/600D. No doubt that Canon has been feeling the heat of the competition from Sony with its point-and-shoots waterproof cameras and Nikon with its swivel-screen displays.
The Canon 60D may inherit 50D’s metallic body and 15.1 MP resolution but it’s likely to have an improved sensor and offer low-light sensitivity. The new Rebel would be of a smaller size than the existing Rebel T1i and would be capable of at least 720p30 video.
Watch out for Canon’s possible announcements at PMA Photography Expo on 20th February, 2010 for more.

I have known Scott Dimond for a few years now and have had the pleasure of his company on several memorable trips. The thing that impresses me about Scott is his tenacity. When Scott gets an idea for a photo, he not only figures out how to make it happen technically, he actually follows through and makes the vision in his head a reality. A lot of photographers have great ideas but no follow through. Another thing I like about Scott is that he is willing to try anything and does not limit himself to one genre of photography. Personally, I think photographers grow best as artists when they are generalists, when they experiment and delve into all areas of photography. The photographers that I know that are super creative are the ones that dabbled and tinkered and played the most. Scott is a consumate dabbler and I have seen his work soar in creativity over the last few years. Thanks Scott for the constant inspiration!
